EXSS (593) Practicum in Physical Fitness and Wellness
EXSS 593 (Practicum in Physical Fitness and Wellness) is intended to be an introductory practical experience (~ 100-200 hours) to the fitness professional field. It is designed to give FP Concentration students an opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge and skill in a “real world” setting. Most students will get their experience in a setting that is designed for healthy and lower risk populations under the direct supervision of an experienced professional in the field. With adequate justification, alternative practicum experiences may be approved by the FP Concentration Director. Certain practicum sites may require more coursework, time, or other regulations.
This course is open to EXSS-FP majors and is normally scheduled in the student’s senior year after all pre-requisites (EXSS 220, 385, 408 or 478, 410) have been completed. Students must contact the FP Concentration Director (firstname.lastname@example.org) one semester prior to taking EXSS 593 (i.e. students must contact FP director during the fall if they wish to take the practicum in the spring). In addition, students will be required to attend the “Pre-Practicum Meeting,” which occurs at the beginning of each semester. An announcement for the meeting will be sent to the EXSS student email list-serve. Registration is available Fall and Spring. Summer practicum supervision and retroactive credit for practicum are not available. EXSS 593 can only be taken one time. This course satisfies the “Experiential Education” requirement for the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Practicum will provide the FP student opportunities to both observe and assist in applied fitness experiences. The student is responsible for finding his or her own practicum site and getting approval from the FP Concentration Director. Students will not be automatically placed into a practicum site. If a student wishes to do their practicum at a new site, they must contact the FP Concentration Director for approval.
The student is responsible for retaining a copy of these forms for him / herself and for providing copies to the FP Concentration Director. Grading expectations and additional forms necessary for Practicum Evaluations will be contained in the FP Manual and distributed at the required Practicum orientation session(s).
