Professional Summary

In June of 2014, Dr. Debby Stroman accepted a faculty position at the prestigious UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Director of Sport Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement assignment at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.  She developed and teaches the Sport Entrepreneurship (EXSS 51 & 328) courses as a part of the popular College of Arts & Science’s First Year Seminars and Entrepreneurship Minor.  Previous EXSS curriculum taught included sport administration graduate program (744, 746, 750 & 751) courses, Introduction to Sport Administration (221), Finance and Economics of Sport (324), and Sport Marketing (322). She enjoys working with UNC’s Center for Faculty Excellence, The Parr Center for Ethics, The Atlantic Coast Conference, and the NCAA’s Office of Inclusion on special projects. She received her degrees from the University of Virginia (B.S.), University of North Carolina (M.A. Sport Administration), and Capella University (Ph.D. Business). Her dissertation title is “The Critical Success Factors of the Atlantic Coast Conference.” Dr. Stroman’s research interests are leadership, marketing, entrepreneurship, and social issues of sport. She is the faculty advisor for the Carolina Sport Business Club, and Sigma Alpha Lambda (leadership & honors society). Dr. Stroman is in her second term as the chairperson of the university’s Black Faculty and Staff Caucus. Recent recognitions include the 2013 ‘Class of 1996 Excellence in Academic Advising’ and the 2013 General Alumni Association ‘Hortense K. McClinton Outstanding Faculty/Staff’ awards. She remains entrepreneurial as she advises athletes as they transition from their sport career (http://laser10.co).

Prior to her appointment at UNC, Dr. Stroman successfully owned and managed her own business ventures. She is the 2006 recipient of the state of Maryland’s Top MBE Award, which recognizes leadership, business, and entrepreneurial success. She also has experience as a grant writer and fundraiser for non-profit organizations. Dr. Stroman is the owner of LASER (Life After Sports With Effective Results™), which provides career coaching and transition planning to former professional athletes.  Previous employment experience includes intercollegiate athletics, the NCAA, corporate management, and financial planning. She is a former basketball player at UVA and assistant coach for the Tar Heels.
